Marilyn A. Swanson, Ph.D., R.D., L.D., is owner and president of MAS- Solutions, where she specializes in providing advice and solutions to improve the nutritional health of our nation's children, with an emphasis on school nutrition programs and obesity prevention. She also has experience in international nutrition and working with minorities.

Prior to her current position, Swanson was the senior specialist for Nutrition and Physical Activity (U.S. Programs) for Save the Children, where the programmatic emphasis was obesity prevention for children in rural areas through a comprehensive nutrition and physical activity program in the schools. She has also served as the USDA/CSREES national program leader of maternal and child health, stationed at the Children's Nutrition Research Center in Houston, and an adjunct associate professor of pediatrics-nutrition at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She has been a food and nutrition and food safety specialist at the University of Idaho; department head for nutrition, food science, and hospitality at South Dakota State University in Brookings; and director of education and training at the National Food Service Management Institute at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

Swanson's research has focused primarily on the area of nutrition education research, behavioral determinants of eating patterns, and best practices for feeding young children in group settings. She has traveled to and worked in over 29 countries, including the Philippines, Ecuador, and the Galápagos Islands, and was selected to spend two and a half years in the Kellogg/Partners of the Americas Fellow in International Leadership Development Program.

Swanson believes in "living the lifestyle she preaches" and enjoys healthful living and exercise. She has completed two marathons. She lives in Pearland, Texas, and frequently travels to Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Galveston, Texas. Her personal interests include spending time with her family (husband, three daughters, and three grandchildren) and friends, walking, fishing, skiing, biking, traveling, ballroom dancing, community theater, cooking, and gardening.
