  • P'kolino Toddler Bed and Chair

What it is: A solid wood bed that's modern and functional – all at a semi-reasonable price? With large side rails to prevent falling, the P'kolino bed comes in three colors (orange, white, and the newest, espresso) and can be folded into a chair once your toddlers have outgrown it. Talk about a sound purchase you can use for years.

What to watch out for: Some bumps can occur due to the low headboard and rough edges on the rails.

    How much: $210–$230

  • Dream on Me Classic Sleigh Toddler Bed

What it is: Toddlers want to be just like us, which is why the Dream on Me Classic Sleigh Bed is the perfect option for parents who want their kids' rooms to look stylish. Designed to sit low to the ground and offering solid wood construction, this bed looks like an heirloom piece at a department-store budget.

What to watch out for: Some say the mattress slats are weak and the bed scratches easily. We also would've preferred that the bed didn't have a 50-pound weight limit because sometimes we think a bedtime story should be read in bed.

    How much: $69–$90

  • Junk in the Trunk Bed

What it is: This may be the splurge of the bunch, but this modern and functional twin bed is the only one you'll need for years and will transition nicely to any guest room. That's why it's called an investment. Besides its design pedigree (it was created by a graphic designer mom and architect/furniture designer dad), it has one of the biggest storage areas around, which is sure to keep your kid's room nice and tidy. Well, at least in theory.

What to watch out for: It's not cheap, and the light but gorgeous upholstery looks like a magnet for stains.

    How much: $825

  • Delta Toddler Bed

What it is: If your toddler needs a bit of convincing to give up the crib, there's nothing like a bed emblazoned with Dora, Sleeping Beauty, or Lightning McQueen to do the trick. Moms appreciate the kid appeal of these beds and rated them tops in ease of use in our survey of more than 2,000 moms about baby and toddler products. Parents also say they're a sturdy choice that easily hold the weight of Mom or Dad for a bedtime story and snuggle.

What to watch out for: Some say this bed is frustrating to put together.

    How much: $65 to $75

  • KidKraft Modern Toddler Cot

What it is: Say goodbye to all the gizmos, stickers, and cartoons and say hello to this modern, sleek toddler bed from KidKraft. Durable and strong to go along with its sense of style, the wooden Modern Toddler Cot is also well thought out. We really appreciated details like its rounded corners and the built-in bench at its foot.

What to watch out for: Active sleepers might bump their heads on the side rails. It fits crib mattresses only, which means when your kid gets too big you'll have to get used to the idea of moving this chic bed out of the house.

    How much: $100–$145

  • Step2 Stock Car Convertible Bed

What it is: Looking for that "wow" factor or just a bed that will make them want to sleep all night on their own? This NASCAR-inspired number from Step2 is perfect for racy toddlers making the transition from crib to bed with no middle of the night sneak-outs. Easy setup and sturdy construction are popular with parents. We like that the Stock Car can be converted to a regular twin bed, which allows you to use it long after the toddler stage has passed.

What to watch out for: The price is a bit high for a plastic bed and if you're using a crib mattress, the fit is just loose enough to fit junior's toy cars (translation: Get ready to spend time fishing out Hot Wheels).

    How much: $260–$300
